After the selection of the right adhesive for your specific application, there are various important aspects that operators should consider in order to minimize health and safety risks and to improve efficiency in the operation plant.
1. Internalize relevant documents
Always check the information stated in the CLP section of the product label or in relevant documents such as our Technical Data Sheets (TDS), Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) and Food Contact Statements (FCS).The TDS contains essential information e.g. on the adhesive’s application areas and product properties, but also critical aspects with regard to cleaning, handling and storage of the adhesive. The MSDS generally comprises further important adhesive-related details for the user of the product such as hazards identification, composition data, first aid measures and transport information. Besides these, make sure to internalize information on handling and storage as well as precautionary measures you can apply to minimize health and environmental risks when using and disposing the adhesive or other products, such as cleaners. Finally, our FCS encompasses comprehensive data aimed at providing our customers with important information so that they can perform their proper risk assessment and manage the risk for the final consumer. Besides detailed information on relevant food contact legislation, e.g. the Framework Regulation, GMP Regulation or Plastics Regulation, we demonstrate the results of our in-house migration tests on the particular adhesive and also specify potential migrants that have to be checked in the final packaging.
2. Protect yourself
Personal safety is a key element in the overall safety of a production plant. In addition to your site’s personal protective equipment (PPE), we recommend to wear gloves, protective goggles and long sleeves while using adhesives or adhesive cleaners.
3. Extend longevity and minimize downtime using cleaners
If you use adhesives in your plant, there will always be impurities caused by adhesives. However, for each impurity there are also matching cleaners. We recommend cleaning the adhesive parts of your system on a regular basis in order to extend the longevity of the equipment and reduce the need for new spare parts. Furthermore, a proper cleaning of machine parts such as guide rails, rollers and compression plates will minimize production downtime.
4. Use quality equipment solutions
Choose the right equipment solutions in order to enhance the quality, safety and efficiency of your operations. At Henkel, we have accumulated expert knowledge on equipment solutions for the handling of adhesives and are offering various systems for adhesive processing. One example are closed melt-on-demand hotmelt systems that help you to achieve the required quality and safety of your production processes. Closed systems support you in keeping your production environment contamination-free and significantly reduce the risk of spilled adhesive being placed back in the bag or in the tank. Furthermore, we provide dosing units for flexible packaging operations, enabling exact pumping of multi-component adhesive systems that allows for compliance with specified mixing ratio and minimizes risks such as delamination.
